What is Hygge?
If you’ve not already heard of Hygge, where have you been? Hygge has become popular in UK mainstream culture for a while now. Originating from Denmark, there is no direct English equivalent meaning to sum-up Hygge, but roughly translated it means “cosiness”.
I personally would describe Hygge as a feeling. The feeling of well-being, contentment, warm, cosy and happy by using and calming all the senses.
I started to put Hygge in place in my life in early 2019 as part of my self-care routine. I mean being a mum of five and running multiple businesses I like to keep myself in good order in both mind and body, which I find Hygge is amazing for.

Winter is well and truly here. The dark nights have set in, it’s freezing cold with the frosty mornings and icy winds. It’s not surprising a lot of people struggle with the ‘Winter Blues’.

In my mind, Hygge during the winter is curling up in front of the fire. Wrapped up in a blanket with a hot chocolate or cuppa tea in hand. My favourite book in the other hand. With the lights down low, maybe a few candles and my favourite incense burning.

The more candles, the better! I find that candles set an instant calm and cosy atmosphere that puts everyone at ease, especially on those dark nights. I love to use scented candles to add that extra sensory experience. Princes candles recently sent me some absolutely divine smelling winter and Christmas fragranced candles in Gingerbread , Seasonal Delights and Enchanted Forest. Perfect for a winter Hygge experience.
Blankets are a staple Hygge must-have. Ever Hygge feature I have come across includes blankets. The feeling of the soft material against your skin and the warmth, cosiness and comfort they provide makes you feel content and relaxed.

Who needs an excuse to grab your favourite mug and pour yourself your favourite warm drink. My favourites winter drinks are chai latte or hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows of course! The warmth of the drink and smell of the spices or chocolate are just dreamy. Warm drinks are great for warming the body and the soul.
Take time out to get your head stuck into your favourite book. Right now I’m loving audiobooks as well as traditional books. I love to escape away from reality during my Hygge time. You can find the books I’ve read in 2019 on Good Reads.
Grab your PJ’s or loungewear, dressing gown and thick fluffy socks. You know, those clothes that allow you to breathe and move without restrictions.
For me, warmth is a massive Hygge in winter must-have! It could be in the form of a hot water bottle or sitting in front of the fire. Nothing feels better after being out in the cold.
The most important thing is to live in the moment when practising Hygge. Enjoys the comfort, relax and just be!
